leper speak easy

14 Jun

the glisten haired samsara girls
held hands with cripples today
and together,
they flipped off four sided clocks
and got down,
got dirty.

Was it the four sided clock on the old factory down in the south side of town? I used to live across the street from it. Next to the Polish rooming house and the pay-phone. Wow… dancing with lepers – sure could have happened there.

the allen bradley clock tower. yep, they say it’s the largest in western hemisphere. i don’t know about all that, but it stays in the memory. were you there during the father groppi years?

That would be the one! Well, I lived in a little house in shadow of that clock. It was a turn of the century white frame with 3 floors (2 and basement) and we had “Polish closets” which were shelves with curtains in front. The neighborhood was a complete melting pot (odd for Milwaukee) that included 3 or 4 Asian countries, Polish, Mexican (all from one family that came in about 75 yrs ago), and others I never knew. I didn’t know about or hear of Father Groppi – tell me. I love Milwaukee memories. Wish my health would let me live in that climate. I’d go back in a heartbeat. I love your poems that are either directly from there or remind me of there. Thanks, Steve!

father groppis was a polish, maybe italian? priest marching for civil rights back in the day when..well, ya know how milwaukee can be right der. sheesh, my parents tell me about there being a curfew and what not.

you’re right. melting pot is odd for milwaukee, but around the allen bradley, maybe national to oklahoma-the lower numbered streets closer to the lake has that polish, mexican mix you were mentioning. that town jackhammers the pretense out of anyone. love it.
