it’s like spanish anarchy all over again

3 Nov

for the past few days,
mcdonalds has been offering free coffee.
it’s great standing in line with the human collective,
and then walking around in the pre dawn dark
with no money
a head full of coffee,
and endless possibilities.

    Fries with that, camarada?

no thanks. the coffee with its drip tight lid allows mobility. fries require too much concentration.

if McDonald’s started handing out free coffee here, in Bucharest, it would have already started a riot.

I don’t know much about Bucharest, but I like the way it sounds and the coffee is maybe stronger?

No, it isn’t. Although it’s a cool concept, strong coffee provoking a riot. It’s just that people here are crazy about free stuff or shitty promotions. A couple of months ago, some store had a sale on frying pans. You buy one, you get one for free. There was a stampede of elderly citizens. Another store, another sale. Cooking oil, this time. Or flour, it really doesn’t matter. People would rush in to buy anything just because they think it’s a huge bargain.

The stamped you speak of seems to be a strange consequence of the “free” product branding. I seen one a few months ago. A guy was handing out toiletry bags from the back of a truck. It’s a nightmare seeing what people will do to each other for a free toilet bowl scrubber and things, but then again, there were also pockets of people encountering each other for the first time.
